Swine flu spreading at 'unbelievable' rate: WHO
PARIS (AFP) - Swine flu spreads four times faster than other viruses
and 40 percent of the fatalities are young adults in good health...
"This virus travels at an unbelievable, almost unheard of speed,"
World Health Organisation Director General Margaret Chan told
France's Le Monde daily in an interview.
"In six weeks it travels the same distance that other viruses take
six months to cover," Chan said.
"Sixty percent of the deaths cover those who have underlying health
problems," Chan said. "This means that 40 percent of the fatalities
concern young adults -- in good health -- who die of a viral fever
in five to seven days.

"This is the most worrying fact," she said, adding that "up to 30
percent of people in densely populated countries risked getting

pandemic virus has rapidly established itself and is now the dominant
influenza strain in most parts of the world," the UN agency said
in a statement.
"The pandemic will persist in the coming months as the virus continues
to move through susceptible populations," it added.

Chan also said that it could be months before sufficient vaccine is

Canada warns businesses to plan now for late 2009 swine flu surge.
OTTAWA (AFP) - Canada's health minister Wednesday warned
businesses to prepare now for a late 2009 swine flu surge,
particularly small- and medium-sized firms that have so far
lagged behind large corporations.
Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq told a press conference most large
firms have already begun to address looming "business continuity
issues," but many smaller companies have no plans in place, due
largely to a lack of resources.
"We know that during a pandemic, all countries are affected and
international spread is rapid," she said.
"We also know that economic and social disruption could occur,
to what extent, we can't be sure. It is crucial, therefore, that
the business world is ready in the event of a more severe second
wave of H1N1 in the fall."
"Canada's businesses need to be able to plan to ensure business
continuity and employees' health and welfare in such an emergency."

China, Singapore join list of places reporting Tamiflu-resistant H1N1 viruses
The World Health Organization says China and Singapore have
joined the list of countries that have reported Tamiflu-resistant
swine flu viruses.
Charles Penn, a scientist with the Geneva-based agency, says
the WHO has also been alerted informally to the discovery of a
small number of other Tamiflu-resistant viruses but he won't say
where they were found.
The WHO has received formal notification of seven cases of
Tamiflu resistance among people with the pandemic flu - three
from Japan and one each from Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong and
Singapore.
Chinese authorities haven't yet filed a formal report including
information about its case but alerted the WHO of the initial
laboratory finding through the Global Influenza Surveillance Network.

WHO recommends Tamiflu in 'severe' swine flu treatment
GENEVA (AFP) - The UN health agency on Wednesday stood by its
advice on swine flu treatment with the antiviral drug Tamiflu
in "severe and progressive" infections, despite a study which
warned against use by children.
"WHO continues to recommend use of antivirals as treatment for
people who are severely ill or are at risk of other health
complications," the World Health Organisation said in a response
to questions about the recent study.
However, it also stressed that the antiviral, made by Swiss
pharmaceutical giant Roche, should not be taken by those showing
just mild flu-like symptoms.
The study published Monday in the British Medical Journal said
that children with seasonal flu should not be given Tamiflu
because harmful side effects may outweigh relatively meagre
benefits.
